Ending Corporate Personhood and Money as Speech- discussion of Move to Amend
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
You're invited to a gathering in Lakewood to explore promoting the Move to Amend proposed constitutional amendment declaring that:

* ONLY human beings, not corporations, possess constitutional rights, and
* Money is NOT equivalent to speech and, therefore, political campaign spending and contributions can be regulated.
Communities across the country are flexing their democratic muscles and proclaiming ENOUGH!
ENOUGH to people and communities without money having their voices drowned out by wealthy individuals and corporations
ENOUGH to corporations using their never-intended constitutional "rights" to harm our lives, families, communities and the planet
ENOUGH to the sleazy and secretive Super PAC attack ads (funded by corporations and the super wealthy of both major political parties) spreading lies, distortions and cynicism.

Individuals in communities across the land are promoting the Move to Amend constitutional amendment declaring as end to corporate personhood and money is speech. More than 150 communities have already passed council resolutions or citizen initiatives. Another 100-plus communities are working on the same. In Cuyahoga County alone…

* Newburgh Heights Village Council unanimously passed last month an ordinance placing language on their ballot for this November calling for an end to corporate personhood and money as speech. The Ordinance also asks voters to demand that any Super PAC directed at Newburgh Hts. public officials, candidates or issues disclosure their contributors. It also calls for an annual public meeting where residents of the Village can testify on the impact on the impact of corporate contributions on elections.
* Brecksville citizens recently submitted more than 1100 signatures (collected in just 2 weeks) calling for an end to corporate personhood and money as speech as well as a "Democracy Day" after every federal election where the public can testify on the impact of political spending by corporations, unions, PACs and Super PACs. If 700 signatures are valid, the initiative will appear on their November's ballot.
* Cleveland residents are circulating a petition this month and next directed at City Council members calling on them to pass a resolution this fall. Several city councilpersons have committed to introduce and support such a resolution.
* Cleveland Heights citizens are planning to launch a citizen’s initiative promoting the Move to Amend Amendment beginning this fall. This follows up on their attempt to get their City Council to pass a Move to Amend Amendment resolution. Council passed a more limited resolution in June calling for an amendment to reverse the Citizens United Supreme Court decision.
It's time for Lakewood to join this growing national movement! Please join us.
