María Elena García is excited to connect with her homeland and visit her extended family in Puerto Rico for the first time. María has grown up with an intense love for the island and even majored in Puerto Rican studies in college. Upon her arrival, and much to her surprise, María isn’t exactly welcomed with open arms. Many consider her an American—a gringa. If she’s a Puerto Rican in the United States and an American in Puerto Rico, is she a somebody anywhere? On her journey to fit in, María muddles through misperceptions and misadventures while searching for what we all seek: belonging.
