Director of Library Development
Kelvin Smith Library, Case Western Reserve University
Responsibilities. The Director, Library Development designs and executes the development program of the Kelvin Smith Library (KSL), including major gift cultivation, solicitation and stewardship and special campaigns (such as reunion class gifts, restricted and unrestricted endowments, and other special projects). The primary
focus of the position is to solicit individual donors. Functioning as part of a University Development team, the Director must manage a list of 150 ¨C 200 library prospects (with an emphasis on closing gifts greater than $100,000) and work in partnership with central and other school©\based colleagues. In this regard, the Director
will develop and implement strategies for direct donor cultivation, build an on©\going portfolio of individual major gift donors, and secure major gifts. The Director is a liaison to an External Advisory Board and participates as a member of the KSL Leadership Team. This position reports to the Associate Provost and University
Librarian.
Qualifications. Required: at least 7 years of progressive professional development experience (preferably in higher education); a successful track record in closing major gifts; a Bachelor's degree required (Master¡¯s degree preferred) in a relevant discipline; an exceptional ability to communicate to donor prospects the opportunities for giving to the library; comfortable soliciting and closing gifts; demonstrated ability to work effectively in a
competitive private research university; broad experience in capital campaign execution and follow©\up, particularly to close major gift solicitations; possess a high degree of energy, creativity, flexibility, and organization; exceptional interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated temperament to work effectively with a wide variety of constituencies, both inside and outside the organization; ability to organize, establish objectives and priorities and achieve goals in an aggressive organizational
environment; strong ability to manage personal workload to achieve multiple strategic objectives; demonstrated capacity to treat confidential materials with discretion. Travel (occasionally extensive) may be required locally and nationally.
Environment. Kelvin Smith Library is the knowledge and creativity commons of Case Western Reserve University, and our vision is to be the information laboratory for knowledge collection, connection, creation, and curation. The Library established a goal of $15 million as part of the recently announced University Capital Campaign of $1 billion. Development opportunities include expanding endowments for the growth of library collections, technology deployment, and improvements to the library facilities. Major initiatives underway
include a focusing and revitalization of special collections and archives and expanding services to support digital scholarship.
