"Loving Basketball In Lakewood" Event 4/24/21

Lakewood residents and leaders gathered on Saturday, April 24 at Madison Park to discuss the future of the basketball court.

  • The hoops were removed by City Hall after two recent shootings at Madison Park. Citizens organized this event to demonstrate support for the hoops.  

  • Local TV stations were there to cover the event.  

  • Roger Sikes, a leader of the Lakewood Outdoor Basketball Committee, emceed the event. 

  • The crowd included many families. 

  • Some of the attendees, including Council member Tess Neff. 

  • John Storey, Chief of Staff for Mayor George, announced that the hoops will be returned within days.  

  • Council nominee Laura Rodriguez Carbone spoke in support of the hoops. Council members Kepple, Bullock, and Rader were also in attendance. 

  • Jalen Davis provides some artwork!

  • Mannie, a longtime volunteer who mentors kids at the court, spoke to the crowd. 

  • Luis Gonzalez Jr. of the Guardian Angels offered to support efforts to work with local youth.  

  • LOBC leader Casey Davis leads a layup line at a temporary hoop.
