Salvage Items Available At Historical Society's Fall Sale

Need to replace a door? Stop by and see if there may be an appropriate solution for your century home. The Lakewood Historical Society’s fall sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 21 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the skate house at Lakewood Park (14710 Lake Avenue). The sale will feature a variety of items recently salvaged from Lakewood homes that have undergone remodeling or are scheduled for demolition. Items include interior and exterior doors, hardware, windows (leaded and stained glass), as well as other pieces. These items, which were destined for the dump, have been reclaimed through the hard work of our volunteers.

The preservation committee of the Lakewood Historical Society has been working to create an understanding, appreciation and celebration of our built environment. Through these efforts we hope to develop a sense of importance for our community’s structures in relation to the history they represent. As part of this work, if your home was built in 1917, you should have received our Centennial Home celebration mailing. If you did, we sure hope you join the celebration by proudly displaying the window cling and considering a party.  Lakewood is a very special community, so special that it is eligible to be on the National Register of Historic Places.

The loss of viable structures not only represents an incredible waste of energy, it often results in a loss of history, gone and usually forgotten. In addition to salvage, the preservation committee has undertaken the research and documentation of structures that may be in jeopardy. While losing structures is usually not a first choice, the Lakewood Historical Society very much appreciates the opportunity we have been given by these property owners to make available items that may otherwise be headed for the landfill. So, whether you need that “original to the age of your home” item, or perhaps to repurpose some cool old house part, stop by and see what we have. If you are interested in getting involved, let us know through our website; Lakewoodhistory.org or call 216-221-7343.
