Hamm Wins Statewide Coach of Year Award

Dr. Mark Hamm

Lakewood resident Dr. Mark Hamm has been named the Ohio Parks and Recreation Department Youth Sports Committee’s Volunteer Coach of the Year. Hamm currently coaches 5/6th grade boys basketball and football programs.

Hamm will be honored at the Columbus Clippers July 9th baseball game where he will also throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Hamm as well as the Lakewood Recreation and Education Department will receive a plaque honoring his service.

Hamm brings to the sidelines the same compassion and caring for youth that he brings to his job as program director for the Westhaven Youth Shelter for runaway and homeless teens. He has been a youth coach for more than 15 years at various levels including youth, middle school and high school.

“I do hope to give back to amateur sports as it has given so much to me,” said Hamm. “I am deeply committed to the concept that these activities are great character builders for youth and provide a healthier atmosphere and life style for Lakewood residents.”

According to the Rec Dept., Hamm takes a very professional approach to teaching kids, parents and fellow coaches both the rules and fundamentals of the game.  He studies the different sports and techniques that work for each age level and innovatively designs practices and skill development methods that challenge players in an imaginatively fun way.

Lakewood’s administration, coaches, and parents believe Lakewood is truly a better place because of his involvement in the lives of our young people.
