Lakewood Hospital to Host Diabetes Expo

On Thursday, October 29, Lakewood Hospital’s Diabetes and Endocrine Center, in collaboration with the American Diabetes Association, will host a Diabetes Expo entitled "Helping People Help Themselves" at LaCentre Conference and Banquet Facility in Westlake. The cost of the event is $10 for the general public and $40 for healthcare providers ($25 for Cleveland Clinic employees). Pre-registration is required.

Lakewood Hospital is the only hospital on Cleveland’s west side that offers physician specialists, dietitians, and educators for patients with diabetes and other endocrine disorders in one location. The Diabetes Expo will include a full-day interdisciplinary conference for healthcare professionals and will be open to the public from 4:00 to 8:30 p.m. The Expo will feature a healthy cooking demonstration, a panel of experts to answer questions, and more.

Registration for healthcare professionals will start at 12:00 p.m. and the day will commence at 12:45 p.m. with the presentation Empowerment; Putting the Patient at the Center by Martha M. Funnell, MS, RN, and CDE pioneer in the empowerment approach to diabetes management, and Michael A. Weiss, former Chair of the Board of the American Diabetes Association.

The group will then have the choice to attend two of three break-out sessions presented by Lakewood Hospital physicians: Diabetes & Stroke, Diabetic Eye Conditions and Effects of Alcohol on Diabetes Management. Healthcare professionals in attendance must be present for 80 percent of the event to receive contact hours.

General public registration will begin at 4:00 p.m. and the first general session, Making Your Voice Heard, will start at 4:50 p.m. During the session, Ohio Legislators will give an update on state and federal legislation concerning the future of health care for those with diabetes.

From 6:00 to 7:15 p.m., Kimberly Karp, RD, LD, and dietitian at Lakewood Hospital, and Craig Hanson, executive chef at LaCentre, will demonstrate how to prepare easy and affordable diabetic-friendly meals. Dinner will be provided at this time.

Lastly, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., a panel of diabetes experts will answer audience questions. All in attendance will receive a copy of the American Diabetes Association’s Caring for the Diabetic Soul.

The Diabetes Expo is made possible thanks to Lakewood Hospital’s Starry Night fundraising event.
