Trees & Trimmings...the True Spirit of Giving by Becca Armbruster
The City's youth volunteer program, H2O – Help to Others, held its first annual "Trees and Trimmings" event and it was a huge success! We sent out flyers in holiday food baskets that were delivered to Lakewood homes at Thanksgiving and we had 17 families contact H2O hoping their names would be drawn to win a Christmas tree because they didn’t have one. The responses came from all kinds of families and we were worried that we would not have enough trees.
When H2O's "Trees & Trimmings" collection took place on Sunday, we were amazed! Car after car kept coming and unloading huge loads of decorations, trees, lights and ornaments. We received 27 trees and endless boxes of ornaments and decorations. More community volunteers stepped forward to help deliver the ‘trees and trimmings” to all the homes and even helped take leftover items to Lakewood Christian Service Center. I was incredibly happy to participate in this collection.
There are families here in our city that needed help and we were able to give them a happier holiday season. The true spirit of giving was in the air this past weekend and I am so thankful that our community showed us how much they care about each other.
