On Saturday, May 1st three events are occurring in Lakewood each with a mission of supporting the arts and local economy. The Screw Factory Artists, The Cleveland Craft Coalition and LEAF are each hosting events that overlap a one-block radius of the city. Each of these groups promotes creativity and local economic growth proving the diversity and energy that exists in Lakewood.

The Screw Factory Artists of the Lake Erie Building are holding their annual spring open studio from 1 pm to 8 pm. Over the past two years the amount of artists working in this space has grown exponentially. As a result annual open studios are being held three times yearly. This spring the artists have teamed with the Friends of Madison Park to hold a silent art auction for the organization. Information about the Screw Factory Artists and this event can be found at http://www.screwfactoryartists.com. Or contact Gina DeSantis at artzy_grl@yahoo.com.

Around the corner at Bela Dubby the newly formed Cleveland Craft Coalition is hosting their monthly craft sale from noon to 4 pm. The Cleveland Craft Coalition, started by a handful of artists & crafters on the Westside in January 2010, came into existence when the founders discussed the idea of a no-pressure craft group that would sell their items locally once a month.  While there are a growing number of creative outlets available in the Cleveland area, such as Bazaar Bizarre, Stitch Cleveland, Wall Eye Gallery, and Cleveland Handmade, the group wants to offer another opportunity for handmade wares to be available for sale and to put forth the message of supporting local.  The Cleveland Craft Coalition coordinators can be reached at clevelandcraftcoalition@gmail.com

Both the Screw Factory Artists’ Open Studio and the Cleveland Craft Coalition show are free and open to the public.

Later that evening in the Lake Erie Building, LEAF will host Rutabaga Nights 2 from 7 to midnight. This event boasts local music, food and drink and a silent auction. The proceeds benefit the local food programs LEAF & City Fresh. Tickets available at the Root Cafe, GreenSmartGifts, and Gypsy Beans & Baking Co. The Lake Erie Building is located at 13000 Athens Ave.
