High School, Middle School Musicians Fill Honors Festivals

Winter is prime time for many high school and middle school honors festivals and with the amount of musical talent in the Lakewood City Schools, you can bet the district is well-represented at a number of the honors ensembles that have performed or will soon be performing throughout the state.

Recently, three Lakewood High students traveled to Ohio University to participate in a weekend-long honors festival that culminated in a performance of some of the most talented high school musicians in the state on January 8. Sophomore Danny Toner sat principal cello, junior Moira Horn was second chair cello, and sophomore Cooper Brown sat assistant principal first violin in the invitation-only event.

At the middle school level, Lakewood is host this year to the Ohio Music Education Association’s District IV Middle School Honors Festival and the district’s two middle schools will be well-represented at the event. The festival is Febbruary 25 and begins at 4 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium. Choir, band and orchestra honors ensembles comprised of some of the region’s best middle school musicians will perform in this free concert. Representing Lakewood’s two middle schools will be:

In this season of honors  ensembles, Garfield 8th grader Tess Marjanovic added another feather in her cap besides the OMEA festival, as she and her director, Julie Tabaj, traveled to Bowling Green the weekend of January 20 for Marjanovic, who plays flute and piccolo, to perform in the university’s Middle Schools Honors Band as part of Bowling Green’s annual Band Music Reading and Directors Clinic. Each January, hundreds of middle- and high school band members, their teachers and directors converge at BGSU for the event.

Congratulations to all the talented musicians!
