Honors Roll In For LHS Bands

LHS students Stephen Moncol (from left), Taylor Wohlfeil and Hugh Campbell spent two weeks in Columbus this summer as part of the All Ohio State Fair Band. The three were nominated by their band director, Brian Maskow.

Lots of Lakewood band news happening, including the LHS Ranger Marching Band wrapping up its band camp in anticipation of its first performance of the season at the football season opener on August 24. Over the summer, LHS band students Hugh Campbell, Steven Moncol, and Tayler Wolhfiel participated in the 2012 All Ohio State Fair Band. These students were selected based upon their Solo & Ensemble Contest scores and band director recommendation. More than 200 students from across Ohio were part of the State Fair Band. The band spent two weeks in Columbus rehearsing and giving multiple performances a day at the 10-day fair. Congratulations to the three musicians on this fine accomplishment.

Also on the marching band front, the Ranger Marching Band has been invited to join the Ohio State marching band at its “skull session,” or final rehearsal at St. John Arena before the Buckeyes' October 6 football game versus Nebraska. The skull session is a combination rehearsal/pep rally open to the public. Throughout the season, high school marching bands are invited to play for the crowd prior to the OSU band’s rehearsal.

The marching band is not alone in receiving select invitations to perform. The LHS Wind Ensemble has been chosen by the band faculty at the University of Akron to perform as part of the 2012 Ohio Band Directors Conference. The conference is an annual event hosted by University of Akron for Ohio band directors that features the performance of new music by several guest, honor, and university bands and highlights the work of a featured composer who visits and conducts seminars for the directors and students.

This year's guest composer is Robert Sheldon and he will guest conduct the LHS Wind Ensemble on at least one of his works. The Wind Ensemble will perform Saturday, December 1 in the main ballroom of the Student Union at the University of Akron.

The Wind Ensemble has also been invited to perform with the Cleveland State University Wind Ensemble for a joint concert on Monday, February 25 in the evening at CSU. The Lakewood High School Wind Ensemble is directed/conducted by Brian D. Maskow.
