Garfield 7th Grader Grabs First Place At NE Ohio Science Fair

Garfield 7th-grader Nicholas Cleary led the way of a number of recognitions for Lakewood middle school students at the 61st Annual Northeast Ohio Science & Engineering Fair (NEOSF) held March 11 at Cleveland State. Cleary won first place in his category and reeled in three other special awards.

Cleary’s project, “What Structure Style Will Best Withstand an Earthquake?” took first place in the Earth/Space category for 7th/8th grade. Besides his first-place award of $100 he earned $100 from his special interest awards and he is now eligible to compete in the Broadcom MASTERS Middle School Program, a national STEM competition.

Students from 90 schools in the seven Northeast Ohio counties submitted 495 projects to be judged in nine different categories: Biology, Health/Medicine, Environmental Science, Behavioral Science, Chemistry, Physics, Math/Computer Science, Earth/Space Science and Engineering. Each project was judged at least twice and some were judged as many as 10 times by special interest groups. Students earned $100 and a gold medal for first place, $25 and a silver medal for second place, bronze medal for third place and varying amounts for special recognition awards.

Nicholas Cleary, 7th grade –  1st place, Earth/Science; plus special recognition awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers, Cleveland Regional Council of Science Teacher and the NEOSF Board of Directors Award for Outstanding Project
