Four Lakewood High students and one recent graduate are wrapping up their second week as part of the All-Ohio State Fair Band. The Fair Band and accompanying Youth Choir have been part of the Ohio State Fair since 1925 and 1963, respectively. Representing Lakewood in this year’s band are Class of 2014 graduate Hugh Campbell, Zak Inak, Tess Marjanovic, Stephen Moncol, and Taylor Wohlfeil.

These students were selected based upon their Solo & Ensemble Contest scores and band director recommendation. Campbell (tenor sax), Moncol (French horn) and Wohlfeil (clarinet) are three-time members, Inak (trombone) is a two-time member, and Marjanovic (alto sax) was a member of the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir before switching to the band this year. Campbell and Moncol each earned first chair position in their respective instrument sections.

More than 200 students from across Ohio are part the band. The group arrived in Columbus on July 19. The group spends four days prior to the fair opening in daylong rehearsals to learn its repertoire for the 10-day fair. The fair ran from July 23-August 3 this year.

Once the fair is under way, the groups perform up to 10 times a day throughout the day for fairgoers, including a daily parade through the 360-acre fairgrounds. The band also traditionally performs off-site at the Statehouse and at Columbus’ Park of Roses, which was canceled this year due to weather.
