Rock And Roll History - 1949 To 1964: A Journey In Sounds

These days, Rock music is found wherever we turn, from the grocery store to television commercials, and everywhere in between. We have all grown up with familiar melodies that are now a vital part of our lives. It is hard to believe that at one time, this music was considered dangerous, risque and cutting-edge. Take some time to learn a little more about the early beginnings of Rock and Roll, and how it has impacted our world.

The Lakewood Division of Aging is pleased to offer an exciting new class, titled "Rock and Roll History - 1949 to 1964," to be taught by Dr. Joel Keller, Professor at Baldwin Wallace University and Cuyahoga County Community College. This class will take an in-depth look at the early roots of Rock, prior to the British Invasion. This course will consider music theory and background, as well as the historical and cultural issues of the 1940's and 1950's. As the class enjoys some early, rare recordings, it will also examine various musical styles that were precursors to Rock and Roll, such as Blues, Jump Blues, Boogie Woogie, Rockabilly, Doo-Wop and more. We will also look and listen to a number of Top 10 Hists and artists, as well as some great "One-Hit Wonders." This fun and interactive class will use many video and audio recordings of live performances from the time period.

The Lakewood Division of Aging will offer this four week course at the Lawther Center, 16024 Madison Ave., beginning Thursday, September 18, 2014. Rock and Roll History will be offered at two seperate times: 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. We welcome one and all to join us for this class, and it will be offered free of charge. Our sincere thanks to Lakewood Public Library for underwriting the cost of this class.

Preregistration is required. Please call the Division of Aging Activities Office at 216-529-5005.
