Saturday Night Cinema At Lakewood Public Library

Terry Meehan wants to take you to the movies. As a popular film host at Lakewood Public Library, he always chooses great titles, educates with anecdotes and rare clips or documentaries and finishes with a lively audience discussion.

His current series “Westerns of the Sixties” continues with "Hour of the Gun," a 1967 movie based on the historical gunfight of Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp at the O.K. Corral. It stars Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. The show starts Saturday, November 14 at 6 p.m. on our big screen in the Main Library Auditorium.

According to Meehan, it’s going to be a special night. “I am looking forward to this one because our guest will be Mary Doria Russell, an author of national stature. This will be our third joint presentation. We have a pseudo debate going on about movies versus history.”

Having authored the newly released novel "Epitaph" (2015), which details the gunfight at the O.K. Coral and "Doc" (2011), an insightful and descriptive account of the legendary Doc Holliday, Mary Doria Russell should have a lot to say about the historical accuracy of the featured film. Both "Doc" and "Epitaph" will be available for sale and signing after the show.

As for Terry Meehan, he has been enamored with movies for decades. His love for cinema led to a Master’s Degree in Literature and Film from Kent State University, and then on to teach film appreciation classes at Lorain Community College and in programs for both Baldwin Wallace and Case Western Reserve University.

Please join Terry Meehan for more of his “Westerns of the Sixties” series in the coming months. He will be presenting "The Wild Bunch" (1969) starring William Holden on Saturday, January 9 and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969) starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford on Saturday, February 13.

You can see a film at Lakewood Public Library on almost every Saturday of the year. Be sure to pick up a Film Calendar on your next visit. And as always, the programs at Lakewood Public Library are free and open to the public. We welcome you!
