Mayor Summers, US Sen. Sherrod Brown Mark Housing Investments In Lakewood’s Birdtown Neighborhood

It’s essential that we keep our homes and our neighborhoods strong and vibrant for the next 100 years. Government — on all levels — has a big role to play here.”

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown recently joined Lakewood Mayor Michael Summer to celebrate the completion of the last of four houses that are part of a collaborative effort to improve housing stock in the historic Birdtown neighborhood. 

The 114-year-old home at 12217 Plover Street had been run-down and vacant for more than two years, before the city purchased it last year, using federal Community Development Block Grants and HOME funding.  

“Lakewood’s housing stock is our economic backbone,” said Mayor Summers. “Like so many of the buildings in Lakewood, homes here have begun to hit the century mark. It’s essential that we keep our homes and our neighborhoods strong and vibrant for the next 100 years. Government — on all levels — has a big role to play here.”

This is one of four houses— all in Birdtown —which the city has purchased, renovated and sold to help improve the neighborhood. During the past three years, the city has successfully acquired, rehabilitated and sold 10 homes to new Lakewood families. That includes two new-construction projects. 

“Vacant lots, abandoned homes, and empty neighborhoods throughout Cuyahoga County are more than just an eyesore – they hinder economic development,” said Senator Brown. “Because of the work being done in the city of Lakewood, we are strengthening our neighborhoods, providing opportunities for homeownership, and attracting new economic development. The Community Development Block Grant and the federal HOME Investment Partnerships Program have provided resources to redevelop homes like the one we’re standing in front of today.”

The home at 12217 Plover Street is one of four such investments in the Birdtown Neighborhood. The others are located at 2126 Quail; 2070 Dowd; and 2147 Dowd.

“This is part of our city’s proactive housing strategy,” said Mary Leigh, the city’s Programs Manager in the Department of Community Development. “These federal funds allow us to intervene in the market where we can have the highest impact.”
