Lincoln Students' Poetry Honored

Poetree Contest winners (from left) Cameron Wereb and Helen Fraunfelder with Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District Educator Kathleen Rocco.

Two Lincoln Elementary students were honored by the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District for their poetry entries in the district's annual Poetree Contest. During April, and in honor of Arbor Day, Cuyahoga County students in kindergarten through 12th grade wrote and submitted poems to celebrate trees.

A winner was selected at each grade level. This year’s third- and fourth-grade winners were Helen Fraunfelder from Allison Martzolf's fourth-grade class and Cameron Wereb from Sonja Kreps' third-grade class. Each student was awarded a prize pack that included cool gear all inspired by trees. Congratulations to Cameron and Helen!

Nature All Around
by Cameron Wereb

Over the trees
Glimmers of light
Shine from above

Under the dirt
Insects and bugs
Crawl below

All around
Dancing leaves
On thousands of trees

All around
Nature springs to life
Sparking the light within it

Over the trees
Under the dirt
All around

Trees
by Helen Fraunfelder

There once was an acorn small,
Soon it will become tall,
It will become an oak tree,
Maybe,
Much taller than you and me.

Pine trees do it a different way,
They drop pine cones when the tree starts to sway, Then the pine cone seeds insert, A new tree starts in the dirt.

A plant needs leaves for air,
Leaves definitely don’t have hair,
But once the plant starts to grow,
You might know,
That there might be some flowers, right there.

My poem is done, end of the show,
And right now I hope you know,
That tree’s are an important part of life, So don’t chop them with a big knife.
