Supplies Drive Super Success

Student volunteers help sort the thousands of supply items donated by the community.

The Lakewood community responded overwhelmingly to the call to provide school supplies for students in need, making the fifth year of the Supplies 4 Success school supply drive another smashing success!

Throughout the summer, the community dropped off at area businesses notebooks, markers, folders, binders, pencils, pens, paper and whatever else a student needs to succeed at school so that no District student would be unprepared come the first day of school.

The communitywide effort yielded some eye-popping numbers:
2,844 pencils
1,188 pens
893 notebooks
837 folders
636 glue sticks
424 binders

All in all, nearly 10,000 items were collected! This wouldn’t be possible without the leadership of Lakewood City Schools parent and community volunteer Karen Lee and the Supplies 4 Success committee. The committee is part of the Lakewood Area Collaborative and is a 501(c)3, in conjunction with Lakewood Community Service Center, H20, Trinity Lutheran Community Outreach and Lakewood City Schools.

It also wouldn’t be possible without the help of our community supporters including New York Life, Lakewood Community Charitable Assistance Corp and the businesses and organizations that served as collection spots: Goddess Blessed, Pet’s General, The Coffee Pot, Beck Center for the Arts, Lion & Blue, E-tech Computers, Breadsmith, Panera, KB Confections, Sweet Designs, The Root Café, Lakewood Hardware, Forbici Salon, Lakewood Dental Arts, Lakewood Public Library and the two public pools.

Once the thousands of items were collected then sorted by an efficient crew of students, a Girl Scout troop and community volunteers, the supplies were boxed and delivered to the 10 schools in the District to be distributed to those in need by the school counselor or parent resource coordinator.

The Recreation Department at the Board of Education on Warren Road collects supply donations all year round so if you missed the summer collection, you still can donate!
