Issue One Forum At O'Neill Healthcare Lakewood On April 5

Susan Murnane, Co-President of the League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland will speak on Issue One at O'Neill Healthcare Lakewood at 3:45 on April 5 in the 4th floor education room of the Assisted Living Building, 1381 Bunts Rd., Lakewood. Murnane's talk will be followed by a question and answer session.

Issue one proposes an amendment to the Ohio Constitution to change the way Congressional districts are drawn in order to reduce partisan gerrymandering. It was enacted by an overwhelming bi-partisan majority of the Ohio General Assembly on February 6 and it will appear on the Primary ballot May 8. It is supported by both major political parties and Fair Districts Ohio, the coalition of non-partisan reform groups that has been collecting petition signatures to place a different congressional redistricting reform measure on the November ballot.  If Issue One passes, it will become law. League of Women Voters is a founding member of Fair Districts Ohio and urges a yes vote on Issue One on May 8.

Murnane will discuss how gerrymandering works and the history of redistricting reform efforts in Ohio. She will explain how Issue One will restrict politicians' ability to manipulate district boundaries for partisan advantage. Gerrymandering is an important issue throughout the country. Many states are gerrymandered, and the non-partisan Brennan Institute reports that in addition to Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Colorado are attempting ballot initiatives. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court recently ruled its congressional districts unconstitutional and ordered new districts immediately drawn. The constitutionality of gerrymandered congressional districts in Wisconsin and Maryland are currently before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Murnane and O'Neill Healthcare invite you to a lively discussion where you can have all your questions about Issue One and gerrymandering answered.
