Spring is finally here, and so is the next session of Lakewood Public Library's diversity and inclusion storytime- This Land Is Your Land- Body Positive edition. What is body positivity you might ask? Body positivity is recognizing that all bodies are equally valuable and worthy of acceptance and love, regardless of size, shape, gender, race or ability. It's about letting others decide what is good and healthy for their bodies, and that no one deserves bias or prejudice because of their size.

So how does this translate to a storytime for children? A child's ability to notice differences and form bias starts at an early age, especially as it pertains to how they look compared to other children. Dolls, clothes, even the media directed at children, plants the idea of what a "normal" body should look like. Children's literature, once again, presents us with a perfect tool to teach children both self-love and acceptance for the unique bodies of others.

Join us on Sunday, May 20th at 3:30 p.m in the Main Library Multipurpose Room, where we will explore body positivity through books, videos, songs and a craft!
