The Brother from Another Movie
The film will be screened in the Lakewood Public Library’s Main Auditorium on Saturday, August 2 at 6:00 p.m. as part of the ongoing Lakewood Public Cinema series. Admission is free and you can bring your own snacks. As a bonus, the next season of Lakewood Public Cinema will be announced for the first time anywhere before the show.
So what exactly is this movie all about? A runaway slave from outer space (who just happens to look African-American) crash lands on Earth and makes his way to Harlem. Will his new friends help him stay one step ahead of the bounty hunters? Is the brother alone on this planet? Originally conceived as a quick way to raise some money to finish another project (Matewan-1987) Brother took on a life of its own and became one of the celebrated John Sayles most successful films. Joe Morton stars as the title character, giving an elegant performance that’s eloquent beyond words. (He doesn’t speak.) And future Oscar nominee David Strathairn plays one of the alien “men in black” on his trail. The other bounty hunter is played by the director himself.
The movie selections for LPC are usually chosen by staff from patron suggestions. The staff will also pick out a classic cartoon or other short subject to show before the movie. To make your own suggestions and support free movies at the Library, all you have to do is join us for show.
