Benefit for MU Fund

Friends of the late Joseph P. Veasey need your support to make his dream a reality. On August 13, we will gather for a unique fundraising event at Edgewater Yacht Club.

Joseph (Joe) Veasey, of South Euclid, was one of three good friends in the 2004-05 Scholars and Leaders Program at Miami of Ohio. Joe was an architecture student diagnosed with terminal Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) in August 2006. Before he died, Joe created a scholarship to be awarded annually to a sophomore architecture student with outstanding character. Unfortunately, he passed away before there was enough money to fully endow the scholarship.

Joe’s two buddies, TJ Bittel from Bay Village, and Chris Good of Munroe Falls have picked up where Joe left off. TJ’s solution is to take on the Rev3 Ironman in Sandusky, Ohio on Sept 11. The Ironman challenge requires a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a full marathon of 26.2 miles. On July 16, Chris competed in a 100-mile foot race, the Vermont 100 Endurance Run.

22,600,000 Steps And Counting, Mark Your Calendar For The 10th Annual Lakewood Hospital Ambulance Chase

Celebrate 10 years of running, walking, wellness, community spirit and support of Lakewood Hospital at the Ambulance Chase on Sunday, May 1.

“This is a fabulous event, not to be missed,” says Ken Haber, Lakewood Hospital Foundation President. “The Ambulance Chase is for all, from the youngest among us in the Children’s Chase, to participants well into their eighties. And the bonus is the difference that has been made in patient care at Lakewood Hospital due to the funds raised through the event.”

The rehabilitation program at Lakewood Hospital gave me my life back,” states Bill Forester, stroke survivor and 2011 Race Committee member. On August 17, 2009, Bill's life changed forever; he suffered a massive, debilitating stroke that affected his speech and the use of his arm and leg on his right side. “I ate healthy, didn’t smoke and was very active...it made no sense. It just goes to show that this can happen to anyone.”

Lakewood Christian Service Center Becomes Lakewood Community Services Center To Better Reflect Its Mission And Constituents

One of the area’s longest-serving human services organizations is changing its name – effective immediately – as the former Lakewood Christian Service Center is becoming Lakewood Community Services Center (LCSC). According to the organization’s executive director Trish Rooney, the shift for the 29-year-old Lakewood-based non-profit speaks to its mission to improve not only the lives of all of its consumers, but also the stability of the community at large.

“We have a highly diversified client base, and many of the citizens who utilize us as a community resource don’t practice the Christian faith,” said Rooney. “We have known for some time that there was a degree of discomfort with the word Christian being so predominant in our name, and we want to convey a broader sense of being inclusionary while maintaining the tenets of our faith-based legacy. It is difficult enough to come for assistance without adding this sense of exclusion for families who need our help.”

Help Us Help Them

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the recession we are in began in December 2007. Layoffs hit levels we hadn't experienced in years. Jobs became harder to find. No one was exempt from the reality of losing their job. Unemployment ends and then there is nothing.

I am a volunteer at Lakewood Christian Service Center and North Coast Health Ministry. They need your help.

LCSC is best known for emergency food assistance to residents of Lakewood, Rocky River and Westlake and provides rental and utility assistance to prevent homelessness, on-site access to additional services: food stamp applications, free legal advice for civil matters, emergency utility payment assistance programs and referrals to other social service providers.

NCHM is a faith-based free clinic, providing healthcare services to low-income individuals in western Cuyahoga and eastern Lorain counties and a resource for referrals to services not provided on-site including, but not limited to medical tests at local hospitals and assistance with medications.

Young Man’s Birthday Celebration Benefits Local Autism Group

People often get together with friends at a bar to celebrate their birthday, but rarely do they use the night of fun to help out others. For Andy Wasserman, making his birthday a reason to give to others is becoming a tradition.

For his birthday last year, Andy held a party at a bar in downtown Cleveland. He then gave money from the night to a friend who was participating in the 3-day breast cancer walk. "I loved that I was able to throw a fun party and help others," Wasserman said. When thinking of who Andy wanted to give to this year, he thought of the people he worked with and knew who have children with Autism. This inspired Andy to contact Milestones Autism Organization about donating the money raised, to their organization.

Lakewood Youth Learn Firsthand What It's Like To Be Homeless

Some people think the word “hero” is overused, but that’s exactly the word used to describe members of the youth group at Lakewood Congregational Church.

Members of the congregation attended an informational meeting on January 9th to plan the church’s seventh annual Homeless Awareness Sleep-Out (HASO). The event is a ministry of the youth group who want to call attention to the plight of people who are homeless by spending the night in cardboard boxes in front of the church building. InterAct Cleveland, a local group working with the homeless community, brought a guest speaker named Don to the meeting to talk to the youth about his experiences on the streets of Cleveland. It was during one of the first HASO events that Don heard about what the church youth were doing. Living at a homeless shelter at the time, Don said he remembered thinking how special the kids must be to help people they didn’t even know. He called them heroes and kept using the word “unconditional” to describe the youth’s commitment to strangers while asking for nothing in return.

Shop For A Cause, Shop For CCLAS

Shop for a Cause. Shop for CCLAS.

Do you love animals? Do you love shopping? You can satisfy both these loves at the upcoming Macy’s Shop-for-a-Cause event on October 16, as Citizens Committee for a Lakewood Animal Shelter (CCLAS) is participating in this year’s event for the second time due to the success last year!

As an active retailer for community causes, Macy’s has partnered for years with non-profit organizations from around the country to raise more than $28 million for their ongoing charitable efforts.

The details are simple. For a charitable donation of $5.00, you will receive exclusive all-day savings storewide up to 25% off on a wide assortment of merchandise (as well as an extra-special offer for selected departments). Macy’s will provide CCLAS these special Shopping Passes to sell for $5 each, and CCLAS will get to keep 100 percent of the proceeds to go towards aiding in the adoption of abandoned cats and dogs, as well as advocacy on behalf of animals and responsible pet ownership in the Lakewood community. We have over 100 shopping passes to sell by October 16. If we sell all of our passes, we would raise about $500 – that would go toward the spay or neuter of 14 adopted animals from our shelter!

If you’re interested in making a $5.00 contribution to the CCLAS and receiving one of these exclusive all-day Macy’s shopping passes, please contact the CCLAS board at cclaspets@gmail.com, or attend the upcoming October Member's meeting at the Lakewood Public Library on Tuesday, October 5th at 7:00 p.m.
