Halloween, Harvest Festival and Heifer Project Combine for Fall Fun

Pumpkins, ghosts and goblins will be joined by goats, bees and chicks in the West End of Lakewood on Saturday, October 28 from 2- 4 p.m. While the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce holds their Annual West End Halloween Window Walk, Lakewood Congregational Church will be hosting their Harvest Festival and Heifer Project International Living Gift Market.

There will be family fun at the market and Harvest Festival including games, face painting, food and live animals. The community is invited to stop in for refreshments as they view the Halloween window displays on the Window Walk.

This is the second year that the church, located at the corner of West Clifton and Detroit, will hold a Living Gift Market. Those attending will have the opportunity to “purchase” income-producing animals such as goats, bees, chicks and heifers. The animals go to hungry, rural families all over the world who are working to improve their lives. The market offers a meaningful gift-giving alternative, especially for Christmas.

Lakewood Congregational has worked with Heifer Project International in many ways. The children’s Sunday School donations all go to Heifer Project and the group was
able to purchase a lamb and a flock of chickens last year. The church youth group also spent their summer mission trip in July at the Overlook Farm in Rutland, Massachusetts which serves as a Heifer learning farm. There, the youth group did farm chores and lived the Global Village experience which simulates daily life in countries served by Heifer including Peru, Thailand and Guatemala.

Heifer Project International is an organization that works to end world hunger and preserve the environment by providing a sustainable source of food to impoverished families. The organization works with their project partners giving them technical training in the care of animals and in enhancing the environment. Those given animals make a commitment to “Pass on the Gift” by giving the first offspring to another family in need. In this way, the gifts that are purchased keep on giving.
