Weekend of Service and Inaugural Events

Postby Ahmie Yeung » Thu Jan 15, 2009 2:46 pm

Not sure this is the correct forum to post these in, so if it belongs in a different section someone please move it.

I'm the main organizer of several goings-on around the Weekend/Day of Service and Inauguration Day, working with a group of organizers from campaign season who are sticking together to keep trying to facilitate the kind of progress we were inspired to work towards through the political season and we're calling our efforts West Shore Campaign for Change. We have a fledgling blog at http://wsc4c.blogspot.com and a Google Group email list for people interested in helping with the background work of our public efforts at http://groups.google.com/group/wsc4c (it requires approval for membership, only criteria is that people are local - this is just to prevent spammers joining and being annoying). If you can't participate in any of our activities coming up in the next week but would like to be involved, please see one of those sites for future information.

We are collecting needed items for Lakewood Animal Shelter (cat and dog supplies, disinfecting cleaners) and Cleveland Tenants Organization (office supplies - plus they can also use volunteers themselves - see clevelandtenants.org to contact them directly) and money donations (preferably checks) for the Cleveland Foodbank. All items will be taken/mailed to the organizations on Wednesday 1/21 and drop off can be arranged any time between now and then (or you can send them directly to your preferred organization if you like). Drop-off location now through Tuesday is my home. RSVP on http://www.usaservice.org/page/event/detail/4v72f or send me a private message here to get the drop-off address.

We are also hosting a live viewing of the swearing-in ceremonies and Barack Obama's inaugural address at West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church from 11:30am until about 1pm (or whenever the live events are done and the officials go to lunch). The church is handicap-accessible and located just across I-90 on Hilliard Blvd. You can bring donations for the above organizations then if you prefer. RSVP for that at http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/gpt3t7 (or just show up if you don't have or want to create an account on that website)

Finally, we're hosting an All-Ages Inaugural Ball (yes, ALL ages - my 18mo and 4yr old sons will be present). Encouraging people (including kids) to dress as fancy as they can and make an extra special event out of it, though if you're coming from work don't worry about it - no one will be turned away due to not being fancy enough! Contributions to the above organizations are the "value" of admission (though no one will be turned away due to being unable to make a donation, either). This is an alcohol-free event due to the number of underage persons likely to be present, light refreshments will be available (bringing additional items is a lovely thing to do). We'll have dancing, activities for the young ones, and a repeat screening of some of the events from earlier in the day. West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, 6:30-8pm. Online invitation is at http://inauguration.hugbarack.com (that will redirect you to an Evite.com listing - the URL here is just a short one I made so I can remember it instead of the random one Evite.com provides).

All events are open to the public and non-partisan.
