Movie Night With Hot Dogs, Jazz Concert With Lunch And Dessert: Free Food And Fun At Church Of The Ascension

Missing Lakewood’s free Friday Night Flicks? Bring your blanket or chair to the Church of the Ascension on Friday, September 16 and enjoy DreamWork’s creation, "Home." Free hot dogs will be available from 6 to 7:30 p.m., followed by the movie at 8 p.m. The free movie caps Ascension’s final “Frankfurter Friday” of the season; 2016 was the seventh year of sharing free hot dogs with neighbors every other Friday during the summer. The food and film screening will be on the church’s front lawn, located at 13216 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood. The festivities will be inside in the event of rain.

Released in 2015, "Home" is an award-winning film for all ages that inspired a concept album, iTunes singles and a Netflix TV series. This 3D computer-animated buddy comedy is based on Adam Rex's 2007 children's book "The True Meaning of Smekday" and stars the voices of Jim Parsons, Rihanna, Steve Martin, Jennifer Lopez, and Matt Jones. It will be shown by permission of Criterion Pictures USA, with equipment provided by NEO Amusements.

Beneath "Home’"s captivating story line, however, is a spiritual message, which will be explored in the sermon and in Sunday School for kids at the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday the 18th. Church of the Ascension is an Episcopal church, and all are welcome to attend.

Also on Sunday, September 18, the church will provide free food and a concert by the jazz combo, Kasper and the Friendly Ghosts, featuring Dave Kasper, Dave King, Joe Hunter and Demetrius Steinmetz. Lunch will be served at noon in Ascension Hall, the band will perform at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary, and the day concludes at 2:30 p.m. with dessert.
