In the not so distinguished tradition of Donald Trump, I've capitalized on a a money-making idea that seems to simultaneously anger some and intrigue and amuse others. Based on the unwavering and instantaneous selling out of every 2016 RNC "Greetings From Cleveland--It's Gonna Be A Riot" t-shirt I am able to print, and the passionate exchange of thoughts on the subject matter--I know I have a hit! Within a few days of its release we have sold several hundred shirts and it is only the beginning of April! With two more months of hype ahead of us before the RNC rolls into town this should only get better.

A huge thank you to MSNBC and their road crew for stopping by Lakewood and setting up in what can best be referred to as the heart and soul of Lakewood, the Root Café! Likewise, thank you to Julie and Bobby for inviting them, in what ended up to be a great PR move for the entire city of Lakewood. The first day alone there were more than 25 mentions of the City of Lakewood on air, even “City of Lakewood, a Great Place To Call Home”. The entire 3-day ordeal went off without a hitch.
No matter how any of us feel at any given time about how the city is being run, and/or being upset with the latest decisions, the easiest and fastest way to evaluate the health of a city is through home sales and home prices. In an ever-shrinking county, we lose about 4.5 people a day last I checked, and with Downtown Cleveland being the fastest growing area in the ever-shrinking county, Lakewood has not only held their own, but has done surprisingly well against many other notable communities. The average time for a competitively priced home to sell in Lakewood is 3 days, and many are selling for over the asking price in those three days. This is an amazing sign. Having the entire MSNBC crew at the Root only made that stronger. Another reason to thank MSNBC and Julie and Bobby.
I’ve spent most of my life interacting with the media one way or another. From hotdog carts, to motor sports, to BP America to the Observer, interacting with media always seems to be a part of the job. So I have seen a lot of them, and have seen a lot of media rooms and location spots. I have to tell you, this MSNBC crew was the nicest and friendliest I have ever been around, and it was the little things that totally blew me away. Example, a young boy and his mother had been standing outside waiting to get in at the opening. There was no line, but they wanted to make sure they got good seats. So they looked around and picked one. A cameraman with the crew, who said that he grew up in Mentor, placed someone in the anchor’s chair, checked the camera, walked back to the mother and said, “If we move this table left a foot, your son will be on TV all morning.” When I commented on how nice he was he said, “Hell I have kids, I get it.” I had never seen this before.
They set up a makeshift make-up area between the men’s and women’s bathrooms, and for hours people would watch pundits getting the glow knocked off their faces, and make-up being applied. In between work, the young women would look over and ask one of the kids, “You ready for make-up?” even getting them into the chair, and performing the ritual on them, as they giggled and their friends would squeal, “I’m next!” and often they were.
I am not saying most crews are pricks, far from it. But MSNBC and this crew really seemed to get it right. They enjoy people, and they enjoy interacting with fans and people, as long as it is a peaceful and friendly environment. I was there for a total of 6 hours over the two days. I must have seen Cleveland’s own Chris Jansing and Tamron Hall pose for 300 selfies. No exaggeration. As long as the person was respectful and polite, they always got one. When they are not working, they have no problem posing with kids, dogs, families, friends, staff whoever. BUT, we all need to remember they are working, it is their office, and they are trying to get through it, just like you and I when we are at work. Also, because they are celebrities and have not only opinions but good looks, they have stalkers. Here in Lakewood, they were keeping an eye out for a person of interest who was following them from state to state, yelling at anchors while they were broadcasting about being unfair to Bernie. Another person of interest tweeted, “I am going to try to get close to Tamron Hall” on Sunday. Just creepy stuff, so respect their office, and respect their space, always.

Mahall’s 20 Lanes (13200 Madison Ave., Lakewood) will, for the first time ever, investigate paranormal activity that has been reported on premises for many years on Saturday, October 24 starting at 8 p.m.
Mahall’s celebrated its 90th year in business this year. For the first 87 years of its existence it was owned by the Mahall family. Only four years ago was it bought by partners Joe Pavlick, Kelly Flamos and Colin McEwan. And since that time reports of unexplained or supernatural events have been reported by many employees and the owners.
The night’s events begin at 8 p.m. (doors at 7:30 p.m.) with a pre-show featuring local dark post-punk supergroup Hiram-Maxim (a band formed through the Cleveland Lottery League featuring Lisa Miralia, Dave Taha, Fred Gunn and John Panza), who will be playing a special spooky set, and Detroit post-industrial/noise legends Wolf Eyes, who are widely regarded to be the kings of US noise music.

I wil be opening my locally-owned catering service, Cleveland Vegan, in a storefront and café in the west end of Lakewood by the end of this month.
The location, at 17112 Detroit Avenue near the Beck Center for the Performing Arts, will be Lakewood’s FIRST ALL-VEGAN café. It will offer daily takeaway selections such as salads, soups, smoothies, sandwiches, fresh juices, bakery sweets, and a sit down brunch service on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
I couldn’t be more excited to bring people healthy, nurturing, and accessible meals. This storefront is the fruition of several years of hard work and we cannot wait to provide a healthy option for people.
Cleveland Vegan is a Lakewood-based business and has been in operation as an all-vegan catering company and personal chef service since August 2012. Its offerings exclude animal products such as meat, dairy and even honey, since it is produced by bees. We have catered events from weddings to corporate lunches to private parties. We also offer a specialized meal delivery service for individuals and families who need assistance in meal planning and preparation.
There is a growing demand for this kind of eating as people become more conscious of their personal health, and also the negative impacts of animal farming on the environment and of course the animals themselves.

Our first foray into our culinary adventure led us to the corner of Warren and Detroit, to an inviting establishment named Eddie Cerino's. Formerly known as Eddie and Eddie's, this bright, modern restaurant welcomes its patrons with a cool vibe and a warm staff. We were greeted promptly and ushered to a table, just a tad too cozy with what must have been a newly enamored couple, judging by the level of PDA (i.e. public display of affection). Our server, Lisa, was particularly friendly and attentive without being overly solicitous. Our meal began with a choice of chicken paprikash or Italian wedding soup; we decided to have one of each (who wouldn't?). Both of the soups were savory and well complemented by the fluffy foccacia bread, presented in charming metal baskets. The cheesy crust was perfectly chewy with a soft, airy interior, which would have been even better served warm.

Bob Holcepl has brought his special talent back to Lakewood. Bob is a graduate of St. Edward High School and lived for a period of time in Lakewood. Life and work saw him move around and open up the now legendary coffee spot in Tremont, Civilization, ten years ago with his wife.
After that success he moved into wholesale with City Roast Coffee and Tea which led to the West Side Market with City Roast Coffee and Tea, which is the longest line at West Side Market in the morning. Then in the next stand he opened Crepes Deluxe, a walk-up french-style crepe stand which has to have the second or the third longest lines in West Side Market, and “The Tea Lab” at 530 Euclid in Downtown Cleveland.
“I always wanted to open a shop in Lakewood,” said Bob. “I went to St. Ed’s in the 60s, and met my wife when she lived on Mars Ave. I have always had a connection to Lakewood and wanted to return, the only question was when and how.” When the spot opened in what used to be GreenSmart Gifts, he jumped on the chance to bring his neu-style tea shop to Lakewood. “A modern take on what tea should be. It is not Victorian, it is not Zen Buddhism, it’s an American modern 21st Century beverage that happens to be 5,000 years old, but relevant today. It is better for you than the junk they sell you in bottles and cans.” Lakewood seems to be a perfect spot; they have walking traffic and the new mindset on tea--a great beverage at any time hot or cold.

They spent the majority of the last few years creating various art and customizing designer toys, so they decided to collaborate to create something bigger together. All three have spent time in Japan, so Asian themes and pop art play a significant part in their influences. Other influences derive from local culture, cartoons, comic books, street art, video games and pop culture.

For those of you out there who are unfamiliar with the play Annie, I am about to offer the following review to see if your interests can be piqued. Everyone else who knows the gist, alas, I have nothing new to share.
Or heroine is a cute, perky little orphan girl named Annie (played by Anna Barrett) who is dead set on finding her parents, or rather (spoiler alert) her place in the world. The show’s snarky big opening musical number is "It’s the Hard Knock Life," a very catchy ditty that will have your foot tapping along with a smile on your face and a semi-awkward feeling in you gut. How can a song where children admit to having ‘empty bellies’ and lines like “we get kicked” end in thunderous applause from a packed opening night crowd? Answer: those orphans are a talented bunch.

Many people have that dream, but Pat Uhr made it her reality and created Harmonic Journeys, a place where like-minded people come together to help learn and grow with one another forming a feeling of connectedness and a sense of freedom that comes from understanding oneself and others, creating a new world where everyone wins! Wow! That is a pretty lofty goal; but Pat took it further and found a way to really continue bringing people together through her Holistic Fairs.

For those who remember the 1980's, the mere mention of the movie "Xanadu" will inspire a giggle, usually followed by a blush of embarrassment for participating in the fads of the time. Leg warmers, roller disco, even the movie's star, Olivia Newton John, have all become symbols of the decade, and are now considered silly by those who survived it.

Just like any other Saturday, this evening I most likely worked an 8 hour shift in the finest of dining establishments. I've tolerated someone's not so funny jokes about how my tip will be effected by how hot his after dinner coffee comes out of the pot, walked 3.6 miles around tables that are far too close together for any server larger than a size 2, and perfected the best bitter server eye roll known to man. Seems like a good night to party! I'm not talking all weekend Vegas bender here, but a couple of cocktails with your best friends after a long, long week of work.

As long as I can remember Lakewood native, Dan Shaw, has been an influential member of the music community. At Lakewood High School he performed with the Jazz Band. At Tri-C jazz studies his senior year he studied jazz piano with Joe Hunter and Jackie Warren, and jazz improvisation with Lakewood saxophone legend and mentor, Ernie Krivda. His band "Jesse Michael Barr" will be headed out to Portland Oregon and to California, but first they are coming home for two shows. First they will be playing at Mahall's on Friday, March 2 in Lakewood, then on March 3 they will be playing at The Parkview Tavern in Cleveland. If you would like to see Dan Shaw and "Jesse Michael Barr" at Mahall's they would definitely appreciate the support and a send-off.

If you have nothing to do on Saturday, February 11, from 7 to 11 p.m., the Vance Music Studos, VMS, Showcase at the Winchester Music Hall is the place to be. You will be able to see 10 young bands for just $5. I have seen most of these Lakewood bands perform over the past two years and I can tell you that they really are great. For example, these bands are so good that one past band was even offered a record deal!
Here are just some of the bands to watch. First, there is my favorite band The Barking Spiders, which is made up of Garfield and Harding Middle School students. Look for Isaac Karel on keyboard and James Elder on his guitar and talk box. If you don’t know what a talk box is come to the show and find out. Then there is Riot101, which is also made up of Garfield and Harding students. This band has already won several awards including a Louie of the Week award and an international cover song competition. At the last show their awesome drummer, Evan Suttell, played wearing an Anderson Varejao wig. Who knows what he will do this time?
